Through planning and going through with my CAS project, there were several different lessons I learned, namely how to plan and work with other people efficiently, managing my time, and I also learned art techniques I could possibly use in my future paintings.
As this was a group project, the project itself wasn't planned and initiated in an individual manner, but rather a collaborative manner. Therefore, communication was a really important factor of the project, as each of us had to come in at a timely manner to finish the project. Although my other CAS activities also helped me learn collaborative skills, the CAS project itself was by far the most helpful. As the activities mostly happened after school, I also had to manage my time wisely in order to balance out my academic activities with my CAS activities. As I stayed after school every Monday, I had to learn how to now procrastinate so that I would be able to finish the homework due on Tuesday a few days before. I don't think I would do anything different if I were to re-do this CAS project. Maybe I would try to come in more than once a week, though, as the project lasted longer than we thought it would (about 3 months). Overall, I was very happy with my CAS project outcomes and I would be happy to participate in a school mural again if I had the chance to do so.

The group has divided up the work to different days so that we can finish the mural in a more time-effective manner. I have been assigned to go every Mondays, and other days of the week if I wish to, to focus on the project, along with Laura Escobar and Marry Xuan. We have agreed that the project must be finished as soon as possible, but our goal is to get the mural done by the end of the school year, which is on June 20th. Because the mural requires us to get paint and other art supplies, we prepared our art box based on the art supplies that are in the high school art room. This includes rollers, brushes, and paint of different colors, such as blue, red, white, etc. We found old paint in Mr. Swanson, the psychology teacher's room, and the colors we needed, such as beige, green and brown were amongst them, so we decided to take the paint after getting permission from Mr. Swanson as a way of acquiring our resources needed for the project. An update on the design for the mural: after looking at the mural and trying to fit in the previous design, we realized that the design might be to narrow to fit it into the actual wall. Amy touched the design up so that the width would be longer. The mural will still be composed of geometic shapes, and we have decided to call the mural the "floating island mural" for the time. For my CAS Project, I have decided to collaborate with my fellow NAHS (National Art Honor Society) members in order to renovate, or cover up, one of the murals outside of the high school gym. The said murals were painted many years ago, and it had become too old. Mr. Kos, our club advisor, wanted us to specifically cover up the one in which the Amazon River was painted on. My group, which consists of Amy Kos, Laura Esocbar, Laura Barborsa from 11th grade, Marry Xuan from 10th grade, and Annelise Castro, Sofia Villafuerte, and Triana Gastañeta, came up with an idea for the mural, which can be seen above. It consists of several floating islands in the midst of a blue sky. The mural is expressed in geometric shapes. The CAS components shown in this project would be all three: creativity, activity, as well as service. It would be creativity, as my art skills and creative skills were used and will be used in the process, and activity, because it requires that I move around a lot, carrying the buckets of paint and reaching to high places to paint the figures. Service would also be involved, as it is a way for the NAHS to give back to the Roosevelt community by using our artistic abilities. The following learning outcomes will be pursued: 1. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience. 2. Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaborative. 3. Identify own strengths and develop areas of growth. |
