Since 11th grade, I have gone to the school club Habla Roosevelt every week to help with the art activities of the club as well as to get children of the workers here at FDR to learn English through a website called Duolingo.
Through this activity, I have demonstrated the following learning outcomes: 1. Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth. 6. Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance. As I was teaching children that had little to no exposure to English, I was able to develop my communication skills, as well as my teaching skills. In order to better help the students learn the vocabulary words that they had trouble with, I decided to write out the words in a piece of paper and give it to them to review. I also quizzed them in the vocabulary words they had trouble with orally so that they would not forget. Through the art activities, I was also able to learn how to plan and initiate an activity; it was troublesome coming up with a new activity that children would be interested in every week, but seeing how they followed through and liked the activity I had planned really added to my motivation. For example, one time we printed out templates of faces so that the students would be able to draw the eyes, nose and lips on the face in a proportional matter. I was happy to help with Habla Roosevelt these last two semesters, and I look forward to helping next semester as well. #Service

I helped out for the mural for ICC this year. Our theme was related to a "barrio."
Through this experience, I have learned: 5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively 7. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions Since the mural is not an individual task, but rather a collaborative one, I listened to the leader's instructions in what to do in order to improve the mural. Since we were restricted to a limited amount of time, it was important to work with each other to achieve maximum efficiency in the minimum time. I also had to think of the consequences of my actions before each brushstroke. I had to think of how and what I would do to contribute better to the mural. This really helped me plan out my future actions before actually going through with them. It's a pity that this is the last year I will be able to participate in the mural; I would gladly like to be part of it next year if it is possible. #Creativity Since 9th grade, I have made an effort to go out every weekend at least once to play tennis with other students in order to keep myself fit and maintain a healthy life.
Through this activity, I have demonstrated the following learning outcomes: 5. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences. 8. Demonstrate that challenges undertaken developing new skills in the process. I spend and hour and half every week playing tennis. This has required me to maintain a healthy life pattern, which has to do with me showing commitment towards my CAS activity. Since this activity happens in the mornings, I have learned to manage my time more wisely and plan my acitivites myself by setting up a time table, which has enabled me to balance out my academic life with my activities, which are what keep my in shape. The strength I have gained from tennis has also helped me with my academic career, as it has helped me focus more on the shorter amount of time I have. I can also study for longer hours, because it has improved my health significantly. Also, when I first started tennis, I had trouble running for half an hour straight; after 15 minutes or so, I would feel tired, and ask for a break. However, through contuining to work on this activity for the past 2 and a half years, I have improved greatly in my skills. Through this, I have learned that developing new skills requires me to take on a challenge, and that great effort yields great results as well. This has given me an incentive to work harder on other activities as well, because I have learned that by trying hard, I can get the results I want. Overall, tennis has taught me many lessons over the past few years, and I am grateful for the lessons it has taught me. It has not only remained as one of the many activities I have done in my high school career, but as an experience I will carry on with my life in the future as well. #Activity December 4th~8th was the NHS Gives Back week, where the NHS members split up into four different groups and hosted various fundraisers. The money raised would go to the hosting of the Worker's Breakfast, Hogar de Gina, Hogar de Madres Adolescentes, and Operation Smile. I was part of the Cookies and Compliments event, where students and teachers were asked to write a message to whomever they wanted to send the cookies to, and the NHS members would hand write the message on a piece of paper and deliver it with two chocolate chip cookies.
Through this event, I achieved growth in the following Learning Outcomes: 3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience. 4. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaborative. 5. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences. This event was initiated by our fundraising group, which consisted of a bunch of 11th graders. Through talking during the monthly NHS meetings and Whatsapp, we planned the event thoroughly before carrying it out without any help from others. Through this, I was able to improve my collaborative and organizational skills. The cookies were to be requested beforehand so that the members would be able to write down all the messages on cards and make the cookies on Wednesday so they could be delivered on Thursday. I went around asking for people to sign up for cookies, packaged the cookies on the day of the event, delivered the cookies, and also walked around school with Laura Barbrosa and Ale Vidal to sell the remaining cookies during lunch (there were quite a few left over cookies, as the bakers were required to make extra in case we might need more the day of the event). Through this fundraising event, we managed to raise a total of 800 soles, having rasied the most of all the fundraising groups within NHS. As a whole, the NHS had raised 1800 soles the whole week. Next semester, our comittee will most likely be hosting the Worker's Breakfast event, and I'm really looking forward to it as well. This activity helped me grow in several different areas, and it was an extremely valueable experience for me. I hope this remains as a NHS tradition at FDR in the future, as well. #Service For Wellness Week by NHS, I participated in the activity, "CSI: The Dental Series." I took part in this activity as both a student and as a National Honor Society member helping the event out. Through this activity, I learned the following CAS learning outcomes: 4. Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaborative. 6. Demonstrate engagement with issued of global significance. In this activity, we, along with the monitoring of Dr. Markham, a former dentist, tested out different waters that are sold in the markets of Lima to see if they were healthy for our teeth. We put in a few drops of the universal pH level indicator into the water. If the water turned green or blue/violet, it meant that the pH level was 7 and up, and that it was either neutral, or a base. However, if the water turned orange, yellow, or even red, it meant that it was an acid. According to Doctor Markham, if the water is acid, it would be harmful to the teeth. We tested out a total of 7 liquids, including water from the commons, and the only liquids that turned out to be acid were the water that included flavoring, such as the strawberry-flavored water and the lemon-flavored water from San Luis. Through this activity, I had to collaborate with the other NHS volunteer, Riah Kim, the teacher, and the students involved in the activity to make sure that it would turn out to be successful. The activity was successful overall, and everybody in the room was content with the outcomes of the activity. Moreover, this activity was also associated with an issue with global significance; most people care about the wellness of their teeth, and how healthy the water they drink is. This activity really helped me learn more about the wellness of my body, and also helped me communicate with my fellow NHS members and underclassmen. #Service For the Inter-Class Competitions this year, in 2017, I was the captain for the mural activity. Through this activity, I learned to: 2. Undertaken new challenges. 3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience. 4. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaborative. As I was in charge of both monitoring the activity, and designing/planning the activity, I had to properly manage my time and at the same time, also plan for how I was going to map out the whole mural. The mural required my co-captain and I to effectively manage the money the prom had given us (a total of 600 soles) to most buy the proper amount of paint with a high quality with the smallest amount of money possible, which was not easy. We had difficulties figuring out which type of paint to buy from where, and which art tools to buy, as we were also in charge of buying the brushes and the rollers and other supplies that were needed. Because we had bought the paint in Jockey Plaza, there was also a need to coordinate how to move the paint from the mall to the school before Monday (we had bought the paint on a Saturday). This was done with the help of another student and a teacher. Because I was co-captaining with my friend, Laura Escobar, I had to learn how to collaborate with her and the rest of the mural team. There were a total of 16 shifts each consisted of 90 minutes, and five people, including me and my co-captain were to participate in these shifts, after school from 5:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. each day from Monday to Saturday the week before ICC. On Wednesday, it was mandatory that we started the shifts at 3:30 and ended at 8:30, and on Saturday, I arrived at school at 9:00 A.M. and left at 7:30 P.M. after finishing the mural and cleaning the area up. During the mural, our team had to overcome several challenges, including technological difficulties. The projector for the mural was not working the first day, so we spent the whole Monday painting the background blue Moreover, although the projector started working on Tuesday, because it kept turning on and off, there were significant changes in the placements of the ships and letters of the original design. We solved this problem by just finishing the background and deciding to free-style, or just draw looking at the design, rather than tracing right from the projector. This also required a fair amount of commitment; as mentioned above, I had to balance my different extracurricular/club activities, my academic life, and also work on the mural. The design alone took me a whole week to complete, and another week was required to transfer the design from paper to the wall. Overall, this mural experience helped me learn to collaborate with my classmates, commit in my CAS activity, and I also learned how to plan a whole activity and initiate it, as well. #Creativity #Activity #Service During the Wednesday Back-to-School-Night on August 15th, I volunteered as a NHS member to help the teachers out so that the night could run more smoothly.
Through this activity, I learned to: 4. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaborative. 5. Show commitment to and perserverance in CAS experiences. The night ran from 3:30 to 7:15, and I was in charge of greeting the parents in the PAC from 3:30 to 4:15, and ringing the bell in the Commons building from 4:15 to 7:15. In the PAC, I handed out the schedule sheets to the 9th grade parents so that they could find their children's classes easily. As a bell ringer, I stayed in the 1st floor of the Commons and rang the bell every 10 minutes so that the parents would know when to move to the next class, and also helped parents who were lost to find the right classes. I stayed in school for nearly 4 hours that day, showing commitment to the activity I had signed up for. After the night was over, I was happy for having been able to lend a hand to the parents and teachers. Because I had to work with several people, including the teachers in the Commons, the staff in the PAC, the parents, and other fellow NHS and SBG volunteer members, I also learned how to collaborate with others to achieve the same goal, which was the help the night run more effectively. I kept myself working throughout the whole night, and I was happy to help when parents or teachers approached me for help. Although there were some difficulties at first with sorting the roles out and the assembly ending later than expected, at the end, the night ended successfully. I would be extremely happy to help out again if I could if I were to have another chance. #Service
The first day we learned how to toss the ball (although I was not very good at it), and the second day we played a mini-game after getting a lesson on how to hit the ball. The rules are very different from other sports I have played, and I look forward to next week.
I am grateful for getting a chance to develop my skills on a sport that I had no idea about in the past. I also learned how to stick to a certain schedule by staying afterschool every day to complete this activity. #Activity |
